R.I.P. Phife Dawg
Malik Isaac Taylor aka Phife Dawg was a founding member of the seminal 90’s hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest. He passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at age 45 due to complications stemming from a longtime battle with diabetes.
For many people who grew up in the 90’s A Tribe Called Quest embodied the truest, purest form of hip hop. They were on the front lines of the remix wars of the 90’s with all the proceeds from their song “Can I Kick It” going straight to Lou Reed, whose song “Take a Walk on the Wild Side” was sampled.
The 2011 documentary Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, directed by Michael Rapaport is the most indepth look at the history of the band, which parallels the evolution of modern hip hop.
